Find Gila Bend on your Arizona Map (on I-8 between Casa Grande and Yuma).  Drive 13.25 mi West of Gila Bend on I-8 to the Painted Rocks Dam Road. Turn North and drive 10.75 mi North to the marked fork - take the left fork East and continue approximately 1/2 mile to the to Painted Rocks State Park recreation area..

The road to the Painted Rock State Park petroglyphs is a good paved road.  There are camp sites available at the recreation area but the only facilities are out-house type toilets.  No water is available.  There is no use-fee for this State Park.  From Phoenix, this trek becomes nearly an all day trip - surely it is difficult to do comfortably in just an afternoon.  On the other hand, it would make a wonderful side trip excursion on your next trip to San Diego or Yuma.  The rich, diverse quantity of rock art make this a must stop.

The petroglyphs are found on the stones, rocks and boulders strewn about on a couple of small mounds situated on the valley floor.  This site should be considered Handicap Accessible with an easy trail circumscribing the small mounds.  The stones adjacent to the trail are covered with petroglyphs, as are the rocks and boulders up the sides and on top of the hills.  Strikingly, nearly every inch of some of the rocks are covered with rock art.  And equally astonishing is the fact that the rock art is predominately limited to the Southern and South- Eastern slopes of the  mounds.

Enjoy,
